Things to keep in mind on your first day in a new job

So you’ve landed a new job and it’s your first day – time to prove that you are the right person for the job.
Here are some tips to make a grand first impression in your new workplace.
Arrive a little early
As with the interview, it’s important to show that you are enthusiastic and organised by arriving a little earlier than your start time. If you’re travelling a new route, give yourself plenty of time in case you are caught in delays.
Be friendly
It’s likely that you’ll be introduced to a lot of people on your first day. This is your chance to make a good first impression with your new workmates. A firm handshake and eye contact are important.
Make an effort to get to know your supervisor and workmates. There are bound to be plenty of chances to mingle so take every opportunity to show you want be a part of the team.
Ask questions
All the research in the world won’t have prepared you for everything your new job will involve so don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you are unsure of something, like when to take lunch, simply ask. Make sure you have a notepad and pen handy to jot down anything you might forget.
Take initiative
There is never ‘nothing to do’. Ask your workmates if they need your help or ask your supervisor if there is anything else you can be working on. Be professional in what you are doing and strive to set an example for other workers.
Limit personal activities
Limit personal visits or calls and the time you spend on personal affairs during work hours. Be aware of the company’s internet policy and definitely don’t complain about your boss or company on social media. Refrain from spending time on your phone or social media.
Show respect
It’s important to always be efficient and respectful to your supervisor, work mates, clients and customers. Make sure to be polite when dealing with others.
Most importantly have fun, do your best and enjoy yourself.
