Preparing for an interview

prepare for an interview

Well done, you’ve scored an interview!

You’re halfway there, now all you need to do is impress the employer to get that job.

Preparing for an interview

If you want to ace your interview then it’s best to be prepared. Here is a list of things to help you get sorted.

Research the company

You’ll create a great impression if you show that you’re interested in the company and that you already know a bit about what they do and how they operate. You can find out information about the company and its employees on the company’s website, on its social media pages and through Google search. Find out who will be interviewing you and their role.

Have an interview outfit planned

Pick something that is of current fashion and try it on a few days before the interview to make sure it fits and looks good. Leave plenty of time for it to be washed and ironed before you need it.

Clean up

  • If your hair is looking a little untidy, now is the time for a cut
  • Shave or trim your beard
  • Keep your hygiene in check – shower and wear deodorant
  • Improve your relationships
  • Make sure your nails are clean
  • Cover up tattoos and take out visible piercings for the interview.

Practise answering interview questions with a friend or family member so that you won’t find yourself stuttering on the day (see our section on common interview questions).

Know your resume

Read your resume through a few times and know what’s on there so you can talk about it confidently.

Know the job ad

Make sure you’re clued up on what the company is looking for so you can sell yourself in the interview.

Check on how you are going to get there

If you’re using public transport, check the timetable in advance and for any delays. It’s helpful to do a practice run to the company building so you know you’ll be on time. If you’re going to be late on the day of your interview, call ahead. But do your very best to not be late.

You can never predict entirely how an interview will go but, for the best chance, a little preparation goes a long way.
