We all need a break from time to time, whether we decide to take it or it’s forced upon us.

If you’re taking a break from work, you may be at a point now where you need to return. Regardless of why you’ve had time away, focus on why it’s been beneficial to you.

Jumping back into the job pool

No matter the reason, treat it as a positive

People take breaks for different reasons, some good, some bad. But when it comes to finding a job, it’s important you can frame it as a positive. Consider the following:

    • If you’ve been looking after your children, you’ve been giving them a secure, loving and safe start in life
    • If you’ve been travelling, you’ve been experiencing and learning about other places and cultures in the world
    • If you or a loved one have had an illness, you’ve won the fight against your illness and are fit again for work
    • If you’ve been unemployed, then you've been taking some time to figure out the next step in your life, and you’re ready to go.

Whatever you’ve been doing, don’t feel the need to make excuses!

    Next Steps

    • Think about what’s next. If you like, set a goal for yourself, or simply take a bit of time to consider exactly what it is you’d like to do
    • Look up old connections. They might just be your feet in the door to an interview
    • Update your resume. And yes, you can include your break – you’ve got nothing to hide, remember?!
    • Start looking for that job!

    Interview tip:

Try not to give the interviewer excuses for your time away. Instead, learn how to recite the positive effects of your break from work.

Returning to the workforce can be daunting, but the only way to get back into it is to just take the leap. MAX Connect is here to help when you’re ready.
