It can take just three seconds for someone to form a first impression about you.
Whether you are going for an interview or it’s your first day at a new job, there are things you can do to ensure you make a positive first impression.
Present yourself well
Before the interview, find out how staff dress and wear a similar or smarter version of the work uniform to the interview. If you’re not sure what to wear, ask your employment consultant, someone in the industry, a family member or a friend.
Ensure the clothes you wear to the interview are neat, clean and tidy. Cover tattoos and remove piercings where appropriate and refrain from smoking before the interview. Taking pride in your appearance will reflect the pride you take in your work on the job.
Express a positive attitude
It’s not just about how you present yourself, attitude also plays a large role in both getting and keeping a job. How you think, feel and act can play a big part in someone’s first impression of you. Let the employer know that you’re really interested in the job and are excited to be there.
Know your stuff
Make sure you’ve researched the company, studied the job ad and are ready to answer common interview questions.
Watch your body language
Remember to use a firm handshake, smile, sit with straight posture and make eye contact. Also try to relax.
With a little preparation and a positive attitude, you’ll create a great first impression and put yourself on course to win the job.
