Moving can be hard work but it doesn’t need to be. With a positive and flexible approach, the whole thing will seem easier, including the task of finding a job.
Things to consider first
- Get to know your new town – particularly the job market and transport
- It might take longer than you think! The sooner you start the better chance you have of hitting the ground running
- Before you leave – ask colleagues to be your referee and meet face to face to remind them of your story in person.
Show them you’re serious
Employers are more likely to consider you as a potential employee if you can meet them in person, so be prepared to travel to your new town to do this before you move. Consider a ‘tour’ of the new town – it’s a great way to get in front of potential employers, plus you’ll get a feel for your new environment.
It’s a good idea to open a post office box in your new town before you move so you can use this address on correspondence to give the impression that you’re present.
Go beyond the phone
Use technology to get face to face with potential employers, eg, Skype, Google hangouts, even Facetime on your iPhone – they’re all great ways. Instead of using the phone for interviews, why not suggest that you ‘Skype’?
Use the MAX network to your advantage
We have branches all around Australia (and overseas for that matter). Use the search filters on MAX Connect to find jobs in your new town. If you have a Job Placement Consultant, let them know that you’re moving.
Finding a job is a task in itself and moving just adds a whole lot more to your load – try and keep organised, stay motivated and enjoy the new experiences.
