Starting a new life in a foreign country can be one exciting adventure. But it is not without its challenges.

The adjustment to a different employment market is one of the biggest hurdles many migrants face when moving country.

Job application rejections can be particularly difficult when you have a long and fruitful career in another country and can’t use that experience in the same way in Australia.

Jozsef Kertesz had a successful career back in Hungary. Despite having strong work experience and qualifying in Australia as an accountant, he was frustrated by the lack of success in finding work with many companies noting his lack of experience within Australia.

By this point, Jozsef was down on confidence and getting anxious about his ability to support his two school-age children with just his wife working as a part-time cleaner.

He joined the MAX team in Joondalup where he participated in the SEE program studying towards a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways.

Despite his university degree and extensive experience, Jozsef took to his certificate studies with drive and determination.

After working on his confidence, his trainer Peter saw an opportunity at the Perth Airport job fair and encouraged Jozsef to attend.

With his new-found confidence, Jozsef managed to secure an interview with car rental company, AVIS.

He used that same drive and determination to drill his interview skills with plenty of roleplays in the leadup to the interview and much to the delight of Jozsef and the team at Joondalup he got the job!

Jozsef gave us an update recently and said he is settled well into his new role in customer service. He is enjoying the variety of work that complements his skillset and experience and has high hopes for his career.

He was very thankful for the team at MAX in rebuilding his confidence and finding the opportunity that fit him and his skills!

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program is delivered by MAX on behalf of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
