Families enjoy the 2016 Toowoomba Christmas Wonderland
The Lions Club of Toowoomba West and MAX Employment helped to brighten the lives of 29 special children and their families this Christmas as part of the 2016 Toowoomba Christmas Wonderland event.
Lions Club of Toowoomba West Project Treasurer Merv Symons said the idea to invite rural ‘VIP guests’ to the Christmas Wonderland event was hatched after our Club saw many families struggling after the drought.
“We wanted to extend some hope and joy to rural families struggling after the drought, so we invited them along to the Christmas Wonderland as our guest,” Merv explained.
“MAX came on board to sponsor the bus to get the children here. Suddenly our plan turned into a reality, and here we are.
“It gives us all that warm and fuzzy feeling to know that, even for a short time, we’ve provided some hope and joy to our visitors at this special time of year.”
MAX Employment Business Manager for the Darling Downs region Todd Williams agreed, saying “it’s great that we can help kids experience something they normally wouldn’t get to experience, we’re happy to be a part of that.
“We see a lot of disadvantage in the Tara region, the industry here doesn’t provide a lot of opportunity and we see a lot of people struggling. This event gave families of Tara a break from that and the kids could forget their troubles for a night.”
Children and their families were treated to a night of festivity with ice cream, balloon animals and face painting on offer, while viewing the spectacular light displays in the Christmas Wonderland.
Merv said the Lions Club of Toowoomba West were thrilled to organise the Christmas Wonderland event once again in 2016 and brighten many more lives for Christmas.
“The majority of the funds from the event go towards Lifeline Darling Downs, Toowoomba Hospice and the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation as major beneficiaries.
“One of our ultimate goals is to help those less fortunate than ourselves. We’re really proud that we can support families in this way,” Merv said.
Toowoomba's Christmas Wonderland runs until Christmas Eve at the Toowoomba Botanical Gardens. Cost is a gold coin donation on entry.
