Don’t lose your best workers simply because your business isn’t in the position to offer work perks. Give them something money can’t buy, something that will make them want to stay: career progression.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a career pathway for any employee:
Step 1: Have a look at what YOU need
What are your business objectives? What do you want to achieve in 3 months, then 6 months, then 12 months? Write down what your business goals are for the future, then look at your employees…
Step 2: Have a look at your employees talents
Have a chat to your staff and ask them: what do you like doing? What do you not like? What would you like to do more of? This is a great way for seeing where their interests lie. And if they’re doing something they like, chances are they’ll stick with you and want to keep doing it!
Step 3: Create an Action Plan
Plan out what you’re going to do to reach your 3, 6 and 12 month business goals, and look at how your employees will fit into that. A business plan can be a great way to expand your current employee roles and build skills in different areas.
If you fill new roles with current workers, you can save money and those employees will feel valued and progressed!
Step 4: Discuss with your employee’s
Once you have a thorough understanding about what you want to achieve this year and HOW you want to achieve it, discuss it with your employees. Let them know what your vision is and let them have their say too. The more you discuss their future with them, the more likely they will be to stay!
Step 5: Keep track
Keep revisiting your business plan to make sure you’re on track, and keep up a constant flow of communication with your employees. Never just assume that they’re doing fine – things change, and you want to make sure they’re still happy with their progression.
